ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITY OF A CIVIL ENGINEERING IN BUILDING INDUSTRY

Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like bridges, roads, canals, dams and buildings.

It is traditionally broken into several sub-disciplines including environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, municipal or urban engineering, water resources engineering, materials engineering, coastal engineering, surveying, and construction engineering.

Role and Responsibility of Civil Engineering

Civil Engineering incorporates a broad range of different job roles. They improve and protect the environment in which we live. They plan, design and oversee construction and maintenance of building structures and infrastructure, such as roads, railways, airports, bridges, dams, irrigation projects, power plants, water and sewerage systems. They also design and build skyscraper buildings and structure that can withstand all weather conditions.

The two crucial aspects within this field are consulting engineering and contracting engineering. Consulting engineers design a specific project whereas contracting engineers manage the physical construction and play a significant role in transforming the proposed development into architecture.

Detail of the civil engineering responsibility

  1. Undertaking technical and feasibility studies including site investigations
  2. Using a range of computer software for developing detailed designs
  3. Liaising with clients and a variety of professionals including architects and subcontractors
  4. Undertaking complex calculations
  5. Resolving design and development problems
  6. Ensuring that the project complies with legal requirements, especially health and safety
  7. Assessing the sustainability and environmental impact of projects
  8. Scheduling material and equipment purchases and deliveries
  9. Ensuring project doesn’t goes out of budget and resources
  10. Ensuring projects run smoothly and structures are completed within budget and on time.
